Died:  04 June 2021 in Fort Gratiot, MI

FORT GRATIOT, MI – Frederic C. “Fred” Witter Sr., age 75 of Fort Gratiot Township passed away on June 4, 2021 unexpectedly. He was born on June 6, 1945 in Port Huron. He married his loving wife of 52 years, Kay L. Sharrard on August 3, 1968 in Port Huron who preceded him in death on May 29, 2021.

Fred graduated from Port Huron High School in 1963. He attended Port Huron Junior College before transferring to Western Michigan University where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in secondary education. He taught 36 years for the Port Huron Area School system all of which was at Chippewa Middle School. He enjoyed teaching his students in various subjects and was proud to have started the Hooked On Fishing-Not On Drugs for the 6th grade students. He was a member of the Port Huron Education Association, Michigan Education Association, National Education Association, Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel and the Blue Water Sport Fishing Association.

Family was a major focus of Fred’s time, especially his three granddaughters. He enjoyed his time with his grandchildren which included rides to and from school, trips out east and talking and texting with them daily when he couldn’t see them. He enjoyed woodworking and building furniture, toys and birdhouses for his family and friends. He also enjoyed the Detroit Tigers from a young age whether watching from home, Tiger Stadium or Comerica Park. He was an avid golfer and fisherman for most of his adult life. He never missed an opportunity to fish, whether on the ice or in his boat. The same can be said for golfing as he was once able to golf all 12 months of the year here in Michigan and even recently got a hole in one.

Fred is survived by; daughter, Kristy (Craig) Snelgrove; son, Eric (Raechel) Witter; granddaughters Madison Snelgrove, Avery and Delaney Witter; sister and brother-in-law Barbara and Gary Dummitt; nephews Scott and Chuck Dummitt; Fred is also survived by special friends; Eric, Kim, Marissa, and Andrea Hartman; in-laws; Ted and Linda Kearns and Ruth Snelgrove; and numerous cousins, their families; as well as his golf and fishing friends. Fred also loved taking his dog, Webster, for morning walks after reading the paper and having his cup of coffee.

Fred was preceded in death by his mother Dorothy Witter Fry; Father Gerald Witter; mother-in-law Lorraine Sharrard; numerous Aunts and Uncles; and good friends Dave Naplin and Ed Bean.

Funeral services for both Kay and Fred will be Tuesday, June 15 at Jowett Funeral Home, 1634 Lapeer Avenue, Port Huron. Minister Shaun Laurain will officiate. Burial to take place in Lakeside Cemetery. Visiting hours will be 4pm-8pm on Monday, June 14 and Tuesday, June 15 from 11am until time of services at noon at the funeral home.
