I stopped by Alexander's to clarify rental details. Talking with the manager, it is true that if we wanted to rent the entire hall that has a capacity of 600 guest, we would have to provide a guarantee of 300 guests. BUT, if we wanted to rent only half of the facility that can seat 300, we would only need a guarantee of 200. If the other half of the hall has not be rented say by March and we find we need more guests, it would not seem unreasonable to negotiate a guarantee number (less the 300) for the remainder of the facility. Secondly if additional space were needed, but not the complete facility, the one banquet room can be opened to the bar area to provide some additional space. Now this sounds like they are willing to negotiate on guest numbers and space. Besides, it only makes business sense to me that if you had a facility that seats 600, I would want no less then a guarantee of 300 for it all. I will stick to my original vote, "Alexander's"....
I think that it is a pretty big risk for the committee to take on. Maybe other venues should be looked into. I appreciate all the hard work that the committee is doing to make this event happen. We do plan on attending, and will be happy with whatever the committee decides.
I haven't lived in that area in years, but to have to assure that many people in attendance seems ridiculous. My advice - keep looking!! A hello and thank you to you and all of the others who have put so much effort into keeping PHHS 63 alive ! Your efforts are truly appreciated and I enjoy hearing the latest news, even if it sometimes isn't good news.
Having just gone to my husband's reunion..., I don't think I would take a chance. Three hundred people is a "stretch" for almost any reunion. ... class had about 270 at their Sat. night party...and we all thought that was a GREAT turnout!! What are your other options? I thought one memo said it was to be held at Black River Country Club. What happened with that? That's where 1962 had theirs and it was really well done, good food and a nice place to have it. Hope you get some other feed back that will help your decision. Good Luck!! Although I live in Ann Arbor, we spend our summers in PH. I'm probably not much help but if there is anything I can do to, please let me know. It really isn't a bad drive up here (1 hr & 45 min.) but I would probably not do it every week...but I could probably do it every month or so. Let me know what I can do to help.
I'M VOTING FOR ALEXANDER'S IN MARYSVILLE WHETHER WE HAVE 300 ATTENDEES OR NOT. ALEX DOES A FANTASTIC JOB! THE FOOD IS FANTASTIC, PRICES VERY GOOD (ESPECIALLY WHEN INCLUDING THE OPEN BAR), AND THE ATMOSPHERE/SET UP ALWAYS IMPRESSIVE. I PERSONALLY HAVE SCHEDULED TWO PARTIES THERE THIS LAST YEAR AND COULDN'T BE HAPPIER WITH HIS SERVICE. ALSO, IF WE DON'T MAKE THE 300 NUMBERS, I THINK IT WOULD BE WORTHWHILE TO BOOK THE WHOLE HALL ANYWAY, JUST INCORPORATING THE MINIMAL DIFFERENCE ONTO INDIVIDUAL TICKET PRICES.
That's the way it is done, you pay if you don't meet the minimum. Check with the K of C , the Eagles, The American Legion. Alexanders is a lot more up scale though. He may work something out for less that 300 people, if he understands it is for a 50th High School Reunion. Look at the free advertising he gets.
... will be there. God willing! Hopefully you will have a big enough response from your listees to get strong feeling one way or another. I guess if the feeling is negative we find a place that will give us a per person rate. My two cents. Thanks again for your efforts.
The Class of 1959 took donations from people who were able 2 donate a little more 2 help defray the expenses of those who might need a little help with the cost. It seems a stretch 2 think we might get 300. It would b nice 2 go somewhere a little nicer ( like Alexander's) 4 the 50th. Has anyone had an opportunity 2 check 4 Lakes. Just some random thoughts only. Thank U 2 the committee 4 all their hard work.
How many people showed for the 45th reunion? Base your expected turnout at about 90% of the last reunion. I would vote for renting as much of the facility (sic Alexander's) as you can without having a 300 people guarantee.
Good choice (sic Alexander's). I am not sure what day we are coming down from Oscoda to PH but will let you know in advance. Hope to connect with a few....
We vote to change location....
I say anything but Mc Morran. Let's have a new event this time....
...I haven't been in PH for a few years, and I really don't know what's there anymore. So I have no preference....
We'll attend the reunion. My wife's reunion was at Edison Inn two years ago. They did a very nice job. I think for our 50th, a place a little nicer than McMorran would be nice. thanks for asking....
I haven't been in PH for a few years, and I really don't know what's there anymore. So I have no preference....
We hope to be there no matter what,....
Do we need the whole hall? What was the cost of the hall or was that included in the $38 person? I do not remember talking about hall rent....
Since every one likes the air cond., the food and the ambience we can take the difference not collected initially and divide the extra hall rent we don't get from selling enough tickets and divide that amount amongst those that do attend! What would that be? 5 to 10 dollars per ticket....
Maybe we ought to invite St. Stephens!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That could add 70 or 80 people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!....
I am hoping to be at the meeting on the 2nd too, if that is ok. After being at my husband's reunion (class of '62), last Saturday...I just want tell the committee how it went....
Thanks for the new info… I find it hard to believe we can attract 300 guests so new plans should be made....
...,Just some info from our reunion last weekend, we had 243 guests at Black River and we were full, but not packed. I don't know if you would get 300 and it might not be good to book at Alexanders. If you only booked half at this time, maybe they would let you know before they booked the other half and at that time you would know if you would get to 300. I don't think the 61 class had 300 either. Hope this helps. I know that we will attend....
Still think we should use the Masonic Center in PH. Nice ballroom with new air conditioner. Food is good and reasonable. Support PH not Marysville....
..., don't you think with a class our size and I assume a lot of spouses will be also attending and the fact it's our 50th class reunion we should be able to reach that 300 minimum. I know in the past the attendance has been a disappointment but just talking on facebook with fellow classmates so far I haven't ran across anyone that isn't planning on attending our 50th. It looks like such a nice place to have it . I hope we can still do it there. I'll be watching to see what you all decide but I vote to go for it !!!....
Len I vote for the Mcmorran lounge or Jr arena....
I pretty much left the area in the fall of 63 and never returned. Since this will be the 50 year reunion it seems like many of those of us who have not previously attended (I did make the first one, as I recall it was at 7 years), see this as a "now or never moment". Hopefully 300 could be a reasonable expectation?....
Len I attended a Christmas party there(sic Alexander's) last December --there were about 60 present and we booked part of the faciity ---we were set off from other dinners and it was very private -- vote we stick with our choice and pay for what room we require....
..., I think I'm in agreement with Sharon but for a different reason. We went to a party there last night and I was underimpressed. The food was not very good and the sound system was also not good. I had already planned to bring up the subject at the meeting....
Do we need the whole hall? Do we have to take the whole hall? If everyone likes the ambience of Alexander's not to mention the food is great, what would the rent be as a pre-set amount and we divide that amount by the number of attendees! What would that mean? 5 to 10 more dollars per couple! Just a wild attempt to start the ball rolling....
..., I just called Linda and Sue and told them to go on line and check it out that you guys had set a date and picked a place. They were all excited too and approved(sic Alexander's)….It was definitely time for change. You know I had another thought. Since you can see their menu on line to pick and choose from that is something else via internet that people could e-mail their choices and that would take some pressure off the committee to make all of those decisions . Give them a date their opinion had to be in by and then majority rules. !!! …sending out an E-mail to tell people about the meeting really will help get more involved. Down the line it might be a good idea to list motels in the Port Huron and Marysville area so classmates in the future can start making reservations. I'll be watching the website for updates....
..., I just saw on our class web page that a date and place has been chosen for our 50th class reunion. I am Sooooo EXCITED it looks like a great place(sic Alexander's) to have it and I'm sure everyone will be very pleased with your choice…. look forward to seeing more plans as they are made....
I'm glad to see that plans are going to start. I believe that we should lead and not follow but incorporate some of the class of 61-62 ideas. The first important thing is the dates. The boat race weekend fills up all hotels and motels at top rate. I think that the 50th we should make it a 3 day event starting with a social get together on fri. Not all classmates are on the same economic playing field and we should consider this in the planning for all as we want everyone to attend as it could be the last for some. The New Edison Inn would be nice but will it be available next July? Some one has to be aggressive and check out all areas for people to stay with what if we were to book number of rooms for 1 to 7 days what is best price, using the numbers to generate the best price. Some thing I think would be nice would be a social gathering at PHYC , Leasing the party boat out of PH for a sundowner , visit to PHHS. Golf would be nice but It would only be for a few. Transportation between event would be nice....
